Best Keyword Research Tools That Are Free

Keyword Research

What are the best keyword research tools that are free? I will give you some of the best options for doing keyword research for online marketing in this article that I use on a regular basis for my campaigns and projects…

#1 – KeywordTool.io

KeywordTool.io is a great tool that gives you multiple ways to research keywords including Google, YouTube, Bing, Amazon, eBay and the Apple App Store. The free version does not show you actual search volumes and has other limitations but is a great way to quickly come up with the most popular keyword searches for any niche you are working in. Because of the ability to see what people are searching for across multiple platforms this is my #1 go to tool for quick keyword research.

#2 – Google AdWords Keyword Planner

You can signup for an AdWords account and get data directly from Google on what people are searching for. You get a wealth of data including average search volumes, cost per click and competition information which tells you how in demand keywords are.

#3 – Keywords Everywhere

This is a browser extension you can get for Chrome or Firefox that displays keyword search volumes and cost per click numbers to help you show the demand of keywords. This is an excellent research tool that gives you extra data as you search on Google, YouTube, Bing, Etsy, eBay, and a few other websites.

#4 – Keyword Shitter

Yup that is not a typo…you enter your seed phrase and it will magically poop out variations, and lots of them by showing long tail keyword results. This is one of the best tools to let run for a while and then save to a file for ideas later. An even better thing to do is signup for Keywords Everywhere, get an API and use it on Keyword Shitter to show search volumes and cost per click prices to have a mountain of great keyword ideas.

#5 – Google Trends

For trend marketing there is no better tool than Google Trends. If you are building a website or starting a project or campaign where you will rely heavily on one keyword or phrase it is a good idea to pull it up on Google Trends and see what the interest is over time. If the keyword has declined over time and in a downward trend it may be a good idea to skip it. If you find a keyword that is trending up or is recently very popular it may be a good time to use that keyword and capitalize on a growing trend.

Other Free Keyword Research Tools

Here is a quick list with links to some other useful keyword tools that have a free option. Many of these are limited in the amount of searches and data provided and you will have to upgrade to a paid version to improve results:

What is the Best Free Keyword Tool?

This is a matter of opinion…so it is hard to define one as the ‘best’. I use most of the keyword research tools that are mentioned on this page, along with a few paid ones that give more data and analysis on competition when using for SEO and YouTube videos and ranking.
